- Biographical information
William James Whitton was born in 1896. He attended George Heriot’s School from 1904-1911.
He was a Staff-Sergeant in the St Michael’s Boys’ Brigade, and held certificates for Ambulance Work. He became an Apprentice Engineer in the West End Engine Works, Dundee Street.
He served in the 15th Royal Scots, September 1914, and was in France, January 1916, where he fought with distinction in the Somme. He died in hospital on 30th June 1916 of wounds received in action two days previously.
He was the son of Mr James Malcolm and Mrs Euphemia Whitton, 2 Shandon Street.
He died at the age of 20 and is on the WW1 memorial at St Michael’s Church.
