- Biographical information
William Fleming Moncrieff Vallance was born in 1898 and attended George Heriot’s School from 1907 – 1916. He was a Harvey Prizeman in English Literature; Heriot Club Esssay Prizeman; then a student of Arts at the University of Edinburgh, 1916 – 1917.
He was the first United Free Church Bursar in 1916.
He became a private in the Highland Light Infantry in April 1917, and was in France March 1918. He then became a Lance-Corporal with the 12th Royal Scots.
He was captured and taken as a prisoner-of-war on 25th April 1918, and died in German hands at Heutmont Hospital (Northern France) on 19th August 1918.
He was the only child of Mr R B and Mrs Christina Vallance, 27 Mertoun Place.
He died at the age of 19 and his name was on the WW1 memorial of North Merchiston Church.
